We recommend orthodontic screenings for our patients by about 6 years of age. In many cases, there are things we can do to encourage straight adult teeth, including an expander at around 6 or 7 years of age as well as exercises to help the muscles of the face, jaw and tongue work together optimally.
If a patient needs braces, we try to keep all the healthy teeth we can. Removing teeth doesn’t always create more room in the jaw, and it usually doesn’t address the underlying cause of the crooked teeth or bite. If the underlying issue is that there is not enough room in the jaw, then a better solution is to create more space. This helps with the teeth, of course, and it also can help kids speak and breathe better. When we create room in the mouth, it creates healthier airways and can reduce the risk of sleep apnoea or jaw joint issues later on.
